Everyone should be very careful in managing piglets in the delivery room, fearing that there will be some mistakes. Today, the editor of Zhuhaoduo.com wants to talk to you about some small details that should be paid attention to when castrating piglets.
- Preparation before castration
Prepare the castration knife, iodine, and the mouth of the iodine bottle. You can poke a few small holes appropriately, so that it is convenient for disinfection. If there is no iodine, you can use white wine, cotton balls, alcohol, and wash your fingers.
Note: If Xiaona operates alone, she feels that the faster way is to first catch all the piglets to be castrated into the incubator, then pick out the gilts, and one person clamps the little boar between his legs to operate. In fact, one person’s castration is also very fast.
- The main details of castration
Generally, piglets can be castrated after about 5 days (if coccidia are driven out, they can be castrated together).
- Grab the little boar and check if there is scrotal enlargement caused by hernia. If the piglet has hernia or scrotal hernia, do not castrate it, put it back to the original pen, mark it, and deal with the hernia piglet later.
- Stand on both sides of the pen and carefully grab all the little boars into the frame.
- Hold the tarsal joint of the piglet’s hind legs and grab the piglet.
- Check if there are signs of diarrhea. If there are signs of diarrhea, do not castrate it, put it back to the original pen, and castrate it after the diarrhea is cured.
- If the piglet is dirty, wipe the skin outside the testicle with a cotton ball soaked in medical alcohol.
- With the piglet’s back facing forward, hold the top of the tarsal joint of the piglet’s hind legs with four fingers, and press the index finger against the bottom of the testicle to tighten the skin.
- Cut the skin and white membrane of the two testicles. The incision should be just small enough to squeeze out one of the testicles.
Note: Some cuts are made with one horizontal cut, and some are made with two cuts. In fact, Xiaona thinks that the two cuts are better, as the cuts are small and more conducive to wound healing.
- Hold the testicle tightly and pull it out to break the spermatic cord and blood vessels.
- Check if there are any ducts still outside the incision. If there are, cut them off with a scalpel. Repeat this action with the second testicle. Apply iodine after castration.
- Wipe the surgical scalpel with an alcohol cotton ball and then castrate the next one.
Note: After castration, rinse all utensils with clean water, make statistics on castrated piglets, and pay attention to all castrated piglets in the first few days. Because pigs are small and testicles are small, some pigs have scrotal hernias but they are not obvious. They may be castrated without paying attention. If they are not found in time, the intestines will come out and the piglets’ lives will be in danger. This is my personal experience! So I remind everyone to pay attention.
